The Story Behind Evo and Eli's Love Box and Sanctuary

Evo and Eli, two very young dachshunds, were dumped at a shelter by a backyard breeder. He discarded them when he could not sell the dogs due to untreated demodex mange. Both Evo and Eli had scratched and itched so much that they had lost their hair and were covered in scabs. Georgeanne took them from the shelter and immediately started treatment. Slowly, but surely their hair started growing back. There were some bald spots, but the medicine and lots of love made a difference. No more scratching, and now they could focus on just being puppies! Evo and Eli were inseparable. They did everything together because of their special bond. If they could not see each other, they would cry and whine until they were reunited. If Evo had a vet appointment, Eli would have to come along. If he was left behind, he would destroy his crate pad and blanket and have bloody paws trying to get out of the kennel to find his brother. It was thought that Evo and Eli would, one day, be adopted to a forever family and spend their days being loved and cared for like they deserved. This would not be their fate. Evo got sick very quickly and was taken to the vet. Georgeanne was told that he had an enlarged heart and was dying. It was a hard decision, but knowing that he was suffering, Georgeanne could only hold Evo and tell him he was a good boy, and that she loved him, while he crossed over to the Rainbow Bridge on September 4, 2010. After Evoβs passing, Georgeanne wanted to do something in his memory. She thought of Evoβs Love Box, knowing that Evo and Eli had never had anything of their own before coming into rescue. They had only dreamed of a soft bed, collars and toys! Georgeanne thought it would be a great idea to collect items for other animals in need.
Meanwhile, Eli mourned for his brother for weeks. After Evo went to the Rainbow Bridge, Eli would not sleep or eat for 2 days. He was heartbroken as he looked daily for his brother. He would go to Evoβs crate, search for him in his old bed, on and behind the couch, and check every blanket in the room.
Georgeanne continued to console Eli and tell him that his brother was not there, but Eli never gave up looking for him. On December 31st at 1:30am, Eli woke Georgeanne. She assumed he might have to potty, so she picked him up to take him outside. As she carried Eli down the hallway, she could feel his heart beating fast, she thought he was excited to go outside. When they came back in, Eli went to bed with his foster mommy and daddy, but Georgeanne knew something wasnβt right because she could hear him breathing fast and heavy. She called her vet Dr. Shew, who sent him to the Mountain View Animal Emergency Clinic. Eli was quickly evaluated, and Dr. Maria Ciaravella told Georgeanne the bad news β Eli had an enlarged heart just like his brother. The emergency vet tried to save him, but Eli was not responding to the treatment. Georgeanne again had to help another baby cross over to the Rainbow Bridge. During this terrible moment she was greeted by a warm smile: Dr. Heidi Mostoller had arrived, the same vet who had helped when Evo went to the Rainbow Bridge. Georgeanne told Eli that he was brave and very loved. And he was going to finally find his brother at the Rainbow Bridge.

My First Day at the Sanctuary
I got up very early, 3 am in fact on my first day here at the sanctuary. My host mom is usually up at 2 am most days. You see one of my new friends here was hungry. I was awful tired to be awake at this hour but Toby was ready to eat. Toby has diabetes and megaesophagus. We sat in these funny chairs together. He has to eat this way. Megaesophagus is a neuromuscular disorder that affects the esophagus, the tube that moves food from the mouth to the stomach. It causes the esophagus to enlarge abnormally and lose muscle tone, which disrupts the normal flow of food and liquid. Megaesophagus can be congenital, meaning the animal is born with it, or acquired, occurring later in life. They do a tremendous amount of work here caring for the animals!

I got to hang out on this cool Easter dog outside of my hosts house.

I even got to sit on the head of this adorable deer. I could not figure out why it was so still?

My host mom has an incredible amount of laundry at the sanctuary so I offered to help.

I met Howard. He is a toy maniac and unstuffs everything so I stayed close to my host mom.

I got to go for a ride in host dads Corvette. ZOOM ZOOM!

My host mom reminded me to brush my teeth and how important dental care is for dogs.
Some of the dogs here need dentals and its expensive and very important. Donations help a lot.

I'm very sad today! πOne of the dogs here Mandee went to Rainbow Bridge. My host mom is heartbroken! Im trying to comfort her.

I got to have an Easter Egg Hunt and it was so fun!

I found the biggest pink egg in a wheel barrow by a giant bunny!
Funny the bunny was so still???

Another sad day at the sanctuary, Hai-Abdel went to Rainbow Bridge.π
My host mom brought Hai to the sanctuary a few years ago. The poor guy was starved and beaten by his owner. When he arrived at the sanctuary he was just skin and bones. He also had been beaten so badly he had two front broken legs. He never really could fully trust. He was a fear bitter. He sadly passed from bowel cancer. Thankfully he had a place to be loved for a short while.

They took wonderful care of him at the sanctuary

Be at Peace Hai-Abdelπ

Today I went to the vet with Grandpaw he was having a cough. I went along to keep him company. I know the vet can be a scary place!

The vet says, Grandpaw needs to start Benadryl and Pepcid for his cough and have
a recheck in 2 weeks.

My host gave me to a grooming today. I feel FRESH! Wash and nail trim.

I was really worried about Mandee and Hai-Abdel reaching Rainbow Bridge so my host mom took me to the bridge.

People leave the collars on the bridge of their pets.

I got to see what it was like to have wheels and I got to roll around a bit in the yard.
Paisley taught me how to use the wheels. We had fun!

I did some rock climbing and boy I wish I had longer legs!

Grandpaw gave me a ride and it was fun!

I got to go to the diner for breakfast. So many yummy choices.

I went shopping with my host mom.

Yippee! I found the jerky treats!

I found some really big colorful balls and toys at the grocery store.

We visited this cool place Mister Ed's Elephant Museum and Candy Emporium

They have lots of big elephants there.

I got to meet Snow White.

I got to sit on this really large nutcracker sculpture.

The garden there was so pretty. This sculpture was made with blue glass bottles.

A really cute close up of me by the very colorful giant elephant.

This guy was huge! I am told he is called Big Foot.

The shop had lots of great treats for me.

I got to ride on an elephant.

I had a second ride on an elephant named Dumbo.

I sat on this elephant in the garden.

They had lots of sweet treats for humans that are not safe for me to eat.

This was such a fun place. I am nuts for Mister Eds!

After the visit we went for pizza and wings.

Sadly my new friend Howard passed away.
My host mom cares for many elderly animals and animals with health issues.

Here I am resting with some of the pack at the sanctuary.

Gracie says she will miss me.

I played with Paisley a bit and visited the cats before I got ready to pack up.

There are many sanctuary cats here too.

This cat was surprised to see me!

I am packing my things and heading to Maryland.

I want to thank my hosts for having me and all that they do for the sanctuary animals. It has been a very sad week for my host family having lost three dogs this week. They can only continue to help with your generosity. If you can consider a donation it is very much appreciated. THEIR PAYPAL IS: [email protected]
