Dash arrives In Massachusetts

The Story of Chance and the inspiration for Chance of a Lifetime Dachshund Rescue.

Chance

7 years ago one of our co-founders & her family welcomed a dachshund into their home to foster. Little did they know the incredible impact this pup would have on them.

His name was Chance.

Chance was seized for abuse by animal control. He had been paralyzed & dragging himself around outside for awhile until neighbors reported this poor pups life. When the owner refused to take him for medical attention, animal control took over & found a rescue to take him.

Chance landed in our co-founders home after 2 previous fosters gave up on him. He was still paralyzed but his open wounds from dragging had healed. As soon as he came into this family’s home he touched their hearts with his perseverance & love. This little pup wanted to walk so bad. He wouldn’t stop trying & they knew they had to do what they could to be his advocate.

After numerous consults with multiple doctors, Christine was told that he would most likely never walk again. Too much time had passed. She looked at him struggling to stand with his favorite ball in his mouth & knew that she had to at least give him a chance. PT, laser therapy, water therapy & acupuncture appointments began soon after. Christine did his appointments during the day while Matt did the home PT exercises with him at night. A few weeks went by & he stood on his own. Strong & tall (well as tall as you can get for a dachshund) Then the steps came. Then the running. Running with that ball in his mouth. Running all over the place. Ears flapping. Happy.

Chance now had one speed & it was GO!! He loved playing fetch, loved his squeaky toys & more importantly he just LOVED LIFE!!

He was adopted by his foster family. His family continued to foster other pups & Chance welcomed each & every one of them into his home. He played with the puppies, comforted the scared ones & sat with the older ones. He loved them all. He was kind hearted & good natured. His loss 4 short years later was such a devastation.

This rescue has been inspired by his memory. He was our “Little Engine That Could”.

We rescue in his honor to give these pups the CHANCE that they deserve.

We have rescued 105 dogs to date in almost 2 years. We take a lot of seniors with medical needs.

The rescue will be 2 years old on 5/1/25. Christine has been involved with dachshund rescue for almost 11 years.

Dash is trying to enjoy the morning news on television with Butter.

Butter

Butter’s Rescue Story

Butter came into rescue because someone was selling him on Craig’s List for $50.

Christine has been fostering him at her home for her rescue Chance of a Lifetime Dachshund Rescue.

Christine shared yesterday with me “We are officially foster failing with Butter! This sweet, energetic love bug has been through so much—bought and sold multiple times on Craigslist, passed between homes, and finally rescued. The rescue stepped in and got him into a foster home in the South before he made his way to us.

Butter has always been nervous after so much uncertainty, and when interest in him picked up in January, we just couldn’t bring ourselves to let him start over again somewhere new. He deserves stability, love, and a forever home—and now he has it! Welcome home, Butter!”**

Dash with Beau

Beau

Dash is hanging out with Beau who has a forever home with the founders of Chance of a Lifetime Dachshund Rescue. Read his story:

Beau - rescued in 2019. He was brought to see his vet in the spring of 2019 when he had an IVDD flare up. His owners did not want to deal with it & asked for him  to be euthanized. The vet found a rescue to take him & he started his rehab. He came to me as a foster in June of 2019. Matt & I went to the Georgia Dachshund Races & we flew back to Boston with Beau. Beau underwent further rehab here - acupuncture, laser therapy & underwater treadmill. He seemed to be rehabbed & was placed up for adoption.

We  ended up foster failing with him & formally adopted him the winter of 2020

Beau had another IVDD flare up when he slipped on ice in our backyard. He was walking but in a lot of pain. 4 appts in one week (including his neurologist - he has seizures as well) , acupuncture, laser, rest & meds & he continued to worsen. We were unable to control the pain for more than a few hours. He was headed in the wrong direction.  We decided that it was inhumane to make him continue like this & Beau had surgery for his IVDD on 12/28/20 (my mother’s birthday). His recovery was amazing!! We owe a lot to the neurology department at VCA Weymouth

This little guy is quirky & sometimes a little fresh but he is also a sweet love bug & we love him to pieces!!

It was really rainy my first weekend in Massachusetts so I did not get to go to Boston but had a photo op with this Boston mug. I’m looking really cute here!
