Dash arrived in Ohio April 5, 2025

I arrived safely to Ohio. I met one one my hosts dachshunds, Theodosius Bogart.

He didn’t try to eat me, just lick kisses!🙄

I had a class today all about IVDD experiences with dachshunds. It’s pretty sad, but my host mom was successful with one of the rescues that she got back up walking 100% in 30 days.

My host mom seems to be pretty smart. I’ll let you know about that later.

Here is a helpful resource for IVDD. DodgersList.com

Tomorrow I’m headed to a local organization that takes donations and the profits go to a different organizations every month. I pray they don’t want to steal me!🤣

Wow what a crazy 24hrs here in Ohio…

Yesterday, my host mom and I cleaned out her basement (I didn’t realize I came here for hard, free labor🤣).

We collected a car full of donations to take to this great organization here in Lisbon, Ohio. Soon after that, we all went to bed and experienced extreme storms. My hosts dachshund, Theodosius Bogart and I did very well during the storm. However, Theodosius Bogart’s brother, Roscoe Peter Swickle (Photo with him to follow later ) absolutely hates storms and slept on my host mom’s head all night shaking. She told me she usually medicates him with a prescription from the vet, but didn’t think about it last night at bedtime. I’m told he gets medicated during the Fourth of July season as well. Poor boy! Today we took all the donations to the Almost Perfect Foundation and Resell which is an upscale shop where all their profits benefit local charities. I got to meet Shiloh, who was a foster fail with his mom Kristen, the shop owner. The foundation has given to our local Humane Society and dog pound.

I got to schedule an appointment with a very famous celebrity that I will be meeting with tomorrow!!! See you all tomorrow as my host mom has me working again today!

This morning I met Johnny Appleseed and his dog Lavender. Although he was born in Massachusetts, he spent his adult life in the Ohio Valley. After the Revolutionary War ended, the government paid the soldiers by giving them land in Ohio. They were required to build a homestead and plant 5 fruit trees. Johnny planted the first orchard here in Ohio-Carrollton. He began his planting journey from there by traveling all over the Ohio Valley helping the soldiers plant apple trees. Every year here in Lisbon, Ohio there is an Appleseed Festival where of course Johnny hands out apples to all!🍎 Dogs too!🥳🐾💕

The festival will be held again this year in Lisbon, Ohio September 20 - 21, 2025

My host moms other dachshund is Sir Roscoe Peter Swinckle, he doesn’t love anyone but himself and always has to be “touching” my host mom.🙄 He thinks he’s the golden child, but I quickly learned it was Sir Theodosius Bogart. We all just exist in his world. He wasn’t mean to me at all, just annoyed that I even tried to touch him.

Wow, what a visit this was! I had the opportunity to go to my host brothers veterinarian hospital. They were so busy I just couldn’t believe it, I actually got a little nervous with all the barking and nonsense going on. Unfortunately, the doctor was too busy to see me, which I’m thankful because I wouldn’t want that! I was able to get past the secret gate that said staff only to see a wonderful employee that works there. I quickly had a few minutes to ask some questions. I was told that we must be on flea, tick and heartworm prevention medicine, 12 months of the year. It is false information that we only need this during the warmer months of the year. I was also educated that if you use a topical flea treatment that you should never use the regular shampoo. You must wait 48 hours after treatment and bathe with a soap free shampoo. She also said the dachshund breed is at extreme risk for severe dental disease. Although it is very expensive, it is very important that we have dental cleanings yearly. I was also advised about no jumping off of furniture to help us all prevent IVDD (we talked about this earlier). Lastly, before I rushed out of there, it was suggested that we should stop begging for food!  Are you serious? 🤣

I am kind of glad the vet didn’t have time to see me as she probably would’ve wanted to do something unpleasant that I would not have liked!

AND get this!! Where did my host  brother’s vet graduate from??? OHIO STATE UNIVERSITY!!🥳

I’m keeping so busy here in Ohio and learning so much.

After a busy day in the weld shop yesterday we went to the store to buy ingredients to make buckeyes. Ohio is known for being the buckeye state as there is a prevalence of those trees here.

I was then quickly educated all about the Ohio State buckeye football team.

As the saying goes around here, you can’t swing a baseball bat without seeing someone in Buckeye attire or buckeye items for sale in every store!

I Learned that Ohio is famous for the first ambulance service in 1865, The invention of the ice cube tray, cash registers in the vacuum cleaner! These people seem pretty smart here in Ohio….

Famous people that were born in Ohio are, of course, Neil Armstrong, Paul Newman, Steven Spielberg, and LeBron James.

We got home and made buckeyes! I wasn’t allowed any chocolate, of course, but I had lots of peanut butter, Yum Yum!

We bought BUCK OPOLY and I won’t spill the beans on who was the loser and flipped the game board.🤣

What a fun morning I’ve had!

I got to go to work today with my host mom. She works for a cell tower company. She took me back in the shop and I got to learn all about welding! She crafted me some safety glasses so I would be safe. Welding is a fabrication process that lets you join metals together by using heat at high temperatures. The welding process began around 3000 BC during the Bronze Age. I also learned some welding “lingo”. Stick, Bird Nest, Bird Poop (laughed way more than I should have), Bubble Gum and Fish Eye.

I had an amazing adventure last night with my host dad. He works at night in Pittsburgh. Pictures were hard to capture. What a scary ride! Our location is only 39 miles to the PA line. But it’s not state highway, it’s country roads with sites of cows, goats, lamas, you can’t imagine the farm animals here. It was still daylight on the way there. We went through some scary tunnel but when we popped out it was sure a shock to see the big city scene.

I went through the Fort Pitt Tunnel and saw where the Allegheny, Monongahela and Ohio River join. I was scared, that’s a lot of water even in the dark! I saw PNC Park where the Pittsburgh Pirates play. It was lit up so bright, wishing I had sun glasses on instead of my safety glasses! I finally made it to the job site, he works in the cellphone industry as well as my host mom. I did not comprehend anything that was shared with me there! It was way too technical, but it was crazy insane seeing all that technology! I slept the entire way home!

Chloe’s Rescue Story

Dash’s host mom shares her story. I had worked at a doctors office and the “breeder” brought Chloe in to see if the doctor wanted her. The woman said she was going to “kill her” if the doctor didn’t take her. The doctor wasn’t able to take on such a big responsibility. I immediately stepped up and I said I want/need her!!! I had the best 6 years ever with her. No one even knew she was blind until I told them. She literally ran the household. She told the other 2 boys when and how to do what. At one point she went completely down with IVDD on December 1st. With her and my determination and everything possible I could provide her, she stood and walked on Christmas Eve. I made her bone broth with fresh bones from my butcher, and added natural supplements to her homemade food. What a gem she was!

Sir Rupert Reinhart’s Rescue Story

Dash’s host mom shares his rescue story. Sir Rupert Reinhart was found by the local police and taken to a lady in town that was known to take “any” animal and do with it what she wanted. A friend of mine caught wind that this dachshund was dropped off at that location. She called me immediately and went and swiped him up within hours of him being taken there. He was tied to a car bumper with 4 other dogs. My neighbor is a groomer and I immediately ran him over there and she got him all cleaned. What a “turd bird” he was! I only had him for 6 months, he was full of cancer. I am glad to have been able to care for him for those few months.

I also used to do dachshund rescue within my small county of Columbiana County, Ohio. My last rescue (probably saved around 12 dogs) It was very hard on me runnning a rescue by myself. I just couldn’t do it anymore. I was recently contacted by someone in my small town, her neighbors dog was dragging her back legs all around the yard. I managed to rescue the dog and get her transported to a friend of mine in New Hampshire.

I learned today the definition of rivalry. It appears there seems to be some sort of that going on with the state of Michigan. I’m happy to report that I am an official OSU fan. My host mom wanted to pack up my gear, but there was no room in my backpack! Looking forward to arriving in “MI” and seeing what they have to say. My host mom says they won’t have much to say!
